Install macOS a Second Time

You can easily (and safely) install macOS multiple times on the same system because Apple now uses the APFS filesystem, which supports multiple logical volumes on the same underlying partition. Modern Macs come with a small ARM processor (called the T2 chip) that acts as the SSD storage controller, sound controller, touch bar controller, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and more. When you get a new Mac, the filesystem on the SSD is encrypted by default, and this encryption is performed entirely by the T2 chip. While this is generally a good thing for personal files, it causes havoc if you perform many small writes to the filesystem because the multipurpose T2 chip just can’t handle the load like other dedicated storage controllers can. One of the common themes from the first weeks of the pandemic was businesses realizing that a remote workforce could get the job done (assuming they had the proper tools for working). As time has passed, the situation has become more complicated. From a tec

What I Learned From Failing the Security+

Getting certified is a great feeling, especially after you have worked so hard studying to understand the exam material. No wonder that people are very quick to share their success stories. But not everyone passes on their first attempt. You don’t often hear about people’s experiences when they fail at achieving a goal — which is a shame. There are plenty of lessons to be learned from failure, even if they are painful ones. Here are some key takeaways from my very own CompTIA Security+ failure — and subsequent redemption. If you recently failed an exam, there’s hope. If you are about to take an exam, use some of these lessons to strengthen your study efforts. All of the highlighted areas that I got wrong were areas that I hadn’t gotten to yet. I got a few basic questions wrong that I should have gotten right. I knew that I needed to concentrate on my next attempt. I kept studying, and every time I made progress, I would retake a practice exam. I got gradually better — to around 90% to

Certified Network Defender (CND)

The Certified Network Defender (CND) by EC-Council focuses on training network administrators in protecting, detecting, and responding to threats on their network. This lab-intensive certification program derives from a job-task analysis and cybersecurity education framework by the National Initiative of Cybersecurity Education (NICE). Essentially, the CND is for blue-team operations. These professionals defend IT systems against attacks by combining up-to-date knowledge of the threat landscape with best practices and network hardening techniques. As systems operation center (SOC) teams expand and take on more responsibilities, these network defenders will continue to be in high demand. EC-Council’s CND joins Directive 8570 alongside a variety of other EC-Council certifications. These include the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), the organization’s most famous offering that focuses on red-team, offensive tactics. Other DoD-approved certifications include the Computer Hacking Forensic Inv

Clean Up Aqua and Install a Widget System

It’s also important to remove any visual distractions from your macOS desktop. To do this, open the System Preferences app and perform the following steps: Navigate to General and select the option to auto-hide the menu bar. Navigate to Dock and, select the option to move your dock position to the right of the screen (since we tile windows from left to right, this will maximize the vertical space used by them). While in the Dock section, also select the option to auto-hide the dock so that it stays out of view unless you need it. Of course, there are always some things you’ll want to display on your desktop in the absence of a menu bar or dock. For these, you can install a widget system, such as Übersicht. After you download the Übersicht app, move it to your /Applications folder and create a link to it on your dock for easy access. The Übersicht website also has widgets that you can download and drag to your widgets folder. (You can see this folder by selecting Open Widgets Folder fr

Colleagues, Customers Line Up to Offer Praise

Former colleague Kirk Robinson, senior vice president and chief country executive, US, at Ingram Micro, noted that after Stegner left Ingram Micro for SYNNEX and started a VARnex, a new solution provider community, it raised the bar for everyone. “I will always be grateful for you giving me a chance to come work for you. I learned so much and while myself and others took the helm at VTN, nobody could hold a candle to what you did. It will always be appreciated,” Robinson said. Stephanie Dismore, senior vice president and managing director, North America, for HP, lauded Stegner for the impact he’s had in the IT channel and industry. “The industry knows that your authenticity, and the way that you approach people is certainly one of a kind. It gets the job done,” she said. Many of Stegner’s most ardent customers have decades-long relationships with him, proof that partnerships are critical to long-term success. “You’ve been there for me through good times and bad. CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner

This certificate joins five other CompTIA certifications listed within DoD 8140/8570.01-M: A+, Network+, Security+, Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+), and CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP). Moreover, the DoD approved Cloud+ for the following workforce categories: information assurance manager level I (IAM I), cybersecurity service provider analyst (CSSP-A), and CSSP infrastructure support (CSSP-IS). Note the focus on security for these three roles, which shouldn’t be surprising. This move comes alongside the news that CompTIA Cloud+ is also compliant with ISO 17024 standards. Ultimately, this demonstrates that the DoD, just like most other enterprises, is undergoing a seismic shift in its IT infrastructure. The future is the cloud. CompTIA A+ Core Series

Networking and Cloud Concepts Added Networking is the remaining topic that has been expanded in the CompTIA A+ Core Series. While networking remains its own domain, more networking and connectivity topics are covered in other domains, as they ought to be. After all, pretty much everything in IT is now connected in one way or another. Connecting to IoT devices has been added. The new cloud and virtualization domain covers connectivity as it relates to cloud, though cloud-based network controller is covered in the network domain. Other additions include more detailed SOHO router/firewall settings, wireless mesh network, radio frequency identification, and wireless protocols Zigbee and Z-wave. So, What Stays the Same? While a lot has changed, some of the best features of CompTIA exams remain. The exam remains vendor-neutral. Questions are written to emphasize problem-solving skills. Introducing NextUp: CompTIA’s new initiative

Thibodeaux explained how they learned that, in general, kids in middle school and early high school are in a very aspirational phase when it comes to thinking about their futures. In short, they’re dreamers. They aren’t yet thinking about the practicalities of a career, money or security. Their world has endless possibilities. Along with that discovery emerged these five key lessons: The college dream is powerful: It is a dream for both students and parents, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, or ethnicity. High school curriculum has to be college prep: This means that programs that focus on hands-on trades or hardware-focused tech skills are minimized or eliminated from high school curriculum because they aren’t perceived as preparing kids for college. There is no silver bullet: There is no single source of information or website that will draw kids to tech. Even if there were, it would be competing with countless other sites from other industries. Kids are passion-driven: Th
